FixItWith.AI – Chapter 1

Chapter 1: My Journey from Zero to Fixer

If you’re holding this book, chances are you’ve been there: your mower won’t start, your pressure washer sputters out, or your chainsaw refuses to fire — and it’s always at the worst possible time. You don’t know what’s wrong, so you’re stuck choosing between hours of YouTube rabbit holes, ordering parts you’re not sure you need, or dreading the call to a repair shop where you’ll wait weeks and pay for labor you can’t see. Either way, you lose.

Until recently, that was me. My professional career has been spent in technology — database failures, application crashes, network outages. If something has a blinking cursor, I’m your guy. Small engines? Completely different universe. I didn’t grow up fixing lawnmowers. I didn’t rebuild carburetors in my garage. I didn’t even own the right tools. And I’ll say this honestly: the people who did grow up doing that have a skill I genuinely respect. There’s a feel for mechanical work — knowing what a sound means, reading wear patterns, trusting your hands — that takes years to develop. I just never had those years.

When Everything Changed

I went to start the engine on my chipper shredder and it refused to start. I was frustrated, pressed for time, and not in the mood for a three-hour YouTube spiral or a Google search that would send me down six different rabbit holes. Out of desperation — and honestly, out of curiosity — I skipped all of it and went straight to AI.

That was the epiphany. I had been using AI at work for months — problem-solving, analyzing data, thinking through complex issues — so I understood how to talk to it. I just had never applied it here. I gave a background and described what the engine was doing, answered a few questions, and within minutes I had a clear, specific diagnosis. No wasted trips to the parts store. No guessing. No waiting. I was in the garage making progress while most people would still be watching their third video hoping for an answer.

The feeling was hard to describe — it was empowering. I had a new tool that met me exactly where I was, and it changed everything about how I approach a problem I can’t solve on my own.

The Moment I Realized: “I Can Do This”

That first repair wasn’t perfect. I still made mistakes. I asked basic questions. I fumbled with finding tools. But I fixed it. Me. A guy who dreaded having to think about whether it was even a carburetor problem.

And that’s when it clicked: AI doesn’t replace skill — it accelerates learning.

It gives you confidence. It gives you clarity. It gives you the next step, when you need it.

Why This Book Exists

I wrote this book because that chipper shredder moment changed how I think about problems I don’t know how to solve. If AI could walk a technology guy through a small engine repair — step by step, no jargon, no judgment — it can do the same for you. You don’t need a shop manual. You don’t need years of experience. You just need to know how to have the right conversation.

If you can follow instructions, you can do this.
If you can describe what you’re seeing, you can do this.
If you can learn one small thing at a time, you can do this.

And AI will be right there with you, every step of the way.
